How to Get to Samaipata, Bolivia

Samaipata is a mountain town in the Santa Cruz Department best reached by road from Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Fly into Viru Viru (VVI) and continue by bus, colectivo or private transfer for the 2-3 hour drive to Samaipata.

By Air

Viru Viru International Airport (VVI), Santa Cruz de la Sierra: VVI is the main international airport serving eastern Bolivia and the Santa Cruz Department. From Santa Cruz city the overland journey to Samaipata takes about 2-3 hours by road.

Jorge Wilstermann (Cochabamba) and other regional airports: Cochabamba is another route into the interior but using Santa Cruz as your base is the most common approach to reach Samaipata.

By Train & Bus

Train: Bolivia has very limited passenger rail service and trains are not a practical option to reach Samaipata.

Bus / coach: Regular buses and minibuses depart from Santa Cruz (Terminal Plan 3 de Febrero / main terminals) to Samaipata; travel time is around 2-3 hours depending on traffic and route. Shared minibuses (colectivos) and private transfers are common; fares are modest and vary by operator.
