Xochicalco Archaeological Site
Pre-Columbian archaeological site in Morelos with pyramids
A pre-Columbian hilltop complex near Cuernavaca, with pyramids, carved reliefs, a ball court and an astronomical observatory. Visitors come for the ruins, museum displays and panoramic valley views that contextualize central Mexico's Postclassic societies.
Xochicalco is an archaeological hill-top complex in the state of Morelos, Mexico, notable for its well-preserved palace temples and carved stone reliefs. It is a recognized archaeological site with significant Epiclassic-period remains and UNESCO recognition for its cultural value.
The site is known for a compact core of major structures clustered on terraces - most prominent are the stepped pyramids, the Temple of the Feathered Serpent, a distinctive circular observatory, and two ballcourts. Visitors typically explore the main plaza, the carved facades at the serpent temple, and the observatory; the site layout is compact enough that most highlights are within a few hundred metres of each other.
Xochicalco developed as a regional centre during the Epiclassic period, roughly between the 7th and 9th centuries CE, showing architectural and artistic influences from central Mexico and the Maya world. It served as a fortified ceremonial and administrative centre and was subsequently abandoned; modern archaeological work and conservation began in the 20th century.
The ruins occupy a fortified hilltop in southern central Mexico within the state of Morelos. The site sits above the surrounding valley landscape and is accessed from nearby roads that connect it to regional towns and cities.
- Reliefs: The site contains large carved reliefs and richly modelled stone sculpture that are concentrated around the Temple of the Feathered Serpent.
- Museum: An on-site museum presents finds from excavations and provides context for the plaza architecture and sculpture.
What to See#
- Great Pyramid and Central Plaza: A stepped pyramid and plaza complex arranged on a fortified hilltop; the site includes large platforms used for public rituals and ceremonies.
- Temple of the Feathered Serpent: A carved stone temple known for reliefs of feathered serpents and warriors, located near the main plaza and often highlighted on guided tours.
- Circular Observatory: A small circular stone structure interpreted as an astronomical observatory; its curved plan and interior niches distinguish it from the rectilinear temples.
- Ballcourts: Two formal Mesoamerican ballcourts with sloping walls where ritual ballgames were played; they are located on the site's lower terraces.
How to Get to Xochicalco#
Xochicalco sits beside Federal Highway 95 in Morelos. By car, follow the Mexico-Cuernavaca/Acapulco corridor (Federal Highway 95) and take the local turnoff for Xochicalco; there is on-site parking and a short walk from the lot to the archaeological zone.
Regular intercity buses run between Mexico City, Cuernavaca and towns along Highway 95 - ask the driver or station staff for a stop at Xochicalco/”Zona Arqueológica”. Organized day tours from Cuernavaca or Mexico City also serve the site.
Tips for Visiting Xochicalco#
- Go early in the morning (right at opening) to avoid the midday heat and the larger tour groups that arrive from Cuernavaca and Mexico City.
- Enter through the main visitor gate where the parking and small museum are located - spend a little time in the on-site museum first to get context for the reliefs and plazas before touring the ruins.
- Climb the main pyramid and the ball-court terraces for the best panoramic views and photo angles; many visitors rush past the smaller plazas and relief panels, so pause to inspect the carved stonework around the Temple of the Feathered Serpent.
- Visit on a weekday rather than a weekend or public holiday when local day-trippers significantly increase numbers and limit quiet viewing time.
