How to Get to Yurimaguas#
Yurimaguas is reached by a small regional airport (Moisés Benzaquén Rengifo, YMS) and by river and road links. The airport is a short taxi ride from town; most longer journeys use buses or river boats from the town’s port or bus terminal.
Moisés Benzaquén Rengifo Airport (YMS): The small regional airport sits just outside town; a taxi from the apron to the central market/terminal takes about 5-10 minutes and commonly costs around S/5-10 (Peruvian soles). Local moto-taxis are cheaper for short hops (S/2-5) but luggage-handling will be limited.
Train: There is no passenger rail service to Yurimaguas.
Bus: Yurimaguas has a Terminal Terrestre where regional buses and colectivos connect with towns such as Moyobamba and Tarapoto. Expect journey times of several hours depending on destination; fares on regional routes are modest (tens of soles) and vary by operator and comfort level - ask locally for current prices and schedules.
How to Get Around Yurimaguas#
Getting around Yurimaguas relies on a mix of short taxi/moto-taxi hops and regional bus or river-boat services for longer trips. For local movement use taxis or walk; for reaching other cities choose buses or river transport depending on destination and time available.
- Domestic flights / regional air services (S/50-300) - Small regional carriers operate into YMS from larger Peruvian cities on irregular schedules. Flights are the quickest way into the jungle; book in advance and reconfirm times - schedules change seasonally. Expect basic facilities at the airport and limited baggage handling.
- Regional buses & colectivos (S/10-80) - The terminal terrestre is the hub for buses and shared vans to Tarapoto, Moyobamba and other Amazonian towns. Buses are the cheapest reliable option for longer land journeys; departures are frequent but timetables can be informal. Bring water and expect longer travel times on winding, sometimes unpaved roads.
- River boats (Varies widely) - Yurimaguas is an important river port on the Huallaga - long-distance river boats travel to Iquitos and upriver communities. Journeys can take many hours or days; boats are slow but essential if overland routes are impractical. Book at the port and be prepared for basic conditions on overnight trips.
- Taxis & moto-taxis (S/2-15) - Taxis from the airport and around town are quick and inexpensive for short trips; moto-taxis are even cheaper for single passengers and very common in town. Negotiate or confirm fares before departing and be cautious with luggage on moto-taxis.
- Walking - Yurimaguas’ centre is compact and walkable for short distances between the market, riverfront and bus terminal. Streets can be busy and uneven; carry sun protection and water.
