How to Get to Zacharo#
Zacharo is a small coastal town in the western Peloponnese best reached by road from nearby regional airports or via intercity bus from Athens. Kalamata International Airport (KLX) is the closest airport; Athens (ATH) is the main international gateway. Public coaches (KTEL) and rental cars/taxis are the usual ways in.
Kalamata International Airport (KLX): Regular summer flights and some year-round services arrive at Kalamata. From KLX you can reach Zacharo by rental car or taxi in about 1h-1h15 (≈75 km); taxi fares are typically €80-€110 one-way. There are also regional KTEL coach connections from Kalamata bus station toward Zacharo and neighbouring coastal towns; travel time by bus is roughly 1h15-1h45 and fares are commonly in the €6-€12 range.
Athens Eleftherios Venizelos Airport (ATH): Athens is the main international gateway for central Greece. Driving from ATH to Zacharo takes about 2h45-3h depending on traffic (≈230 km); rental-car and intercity coach options are most common. Intercity KTEL buses from Athens to the Western Peloponnese run to larger towns (e.g., Pyrgos), with onward local buses or taxis to Zacharo; expect the Athens→Pyrgos ticket to be around €20-€30 and an additional local transfer of 20-40 minutes.
Train: There is no direct national rail service into Zacharo; the nearest active railway hubs are Pyrgos and Kyparissia on the Peloponnese network. From Pyrgos station you can transfer by local bus or taxi to Zacharo in about 30-50 minutes.
Bus: Regional KTEL coaches are the primary public option. KTEL Messinia and KTEL Ilia operate routes that connect Kalamata, Pyrgos and Athens with Zacharo; journey times vary (Kalamata→Zacharo ~1h15-1h45, Athens→Zacharo ~3h including connections) and single fares typically range from about €6 up to €30 depending on distance.
How to Get Around Zacharo#
Zacharo is best navigated by car or regional coach; rental cars give the most freedom for coastal and inland sights. Public KTEL buses serve the town but run less frequently outside summer, so plan timetables or combine buses with taxis.
- Car / Rental (€40-€80/day (rental)) - Driving is the most flexible way to reach and explore Zacharo and the surrounding Peloponnese coast. Roads are straightforward; allow extra time in peak summer weekends. Fuel and tolls are comparable to national averages in Greece.
- Taxi (€30-€120) - Taxis provide direct transfers from airports and nearby towns; useful if travelling with luggage or late at night. Expect higher fixed fares from airports (Kalamata→Zacharo ~€80-€110, Athens→Zacharo considerably more). Agree a price or use the meter where available.
- KTEL Regional Bus (€6-€30) - KTEL regional coaches link Zacharo with Kalamata, Pyrgos and Athens. Buses are the main public transport option and are relatively cheap but run on fixed timetables-check KTEL Messinia and KTEL Ilia schedules in advance. Luggage space is limited on smaller regional services.
- Local Bus / Shuttle (€1.50-€6) - Local buses and occasional tourist shuttles connect Zacharo with neighbouring villages and beaches. Frequencies are lower outside peak season, so plan connections ahead. Taxis or rental cars are convenient alternatives for tight schedules.

- Walking - Zacharo’s town centre and beachfront are compact and very walkable; walking is the best way to explore shops, tavernas and the seafront. Bring sun protection during summer as shade is limited.
