How to Get to Zalakaros#
Zalakaros (Zala County) is best reached from Budapest by car, train to Nagykanizsa plus a short bus/taxi, or by direct intercity bus. It’s a small spa town that’s easiest accessed with a car for local flexibility.
Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD): Budapest is the main international gateway for Zalakaros. From Budapest the drive is about 2-2.5 hours; direct buses and trains run to nearby towns such as Nagykanizsa from where local buses connect to Zalakaros. Car rental from Budapest is a common option.
Hévíz-Balaton Airport (SOB) / FlyBalaton (seasonal): There are seasonal/smaller airports serving the Lake Balaton region-if available during your travel dates they can shorten transfers; otherwise Budapest is the reliable all-year option.
Train: The nearest larger rail hub is Nagykanizsa (rail connections from Budapest). From Nagykanizsa you can catch a local bus or taxi to Zalakaros (about 20-30 minutes). Train fares from Budapest to Nagykanizsa vary by service but are generally inexpensive for regional trains.
Bus: Direct intercity buses from Budapest to Zalakaros or nearby towns run several times daily; buses are a straightforward and inexpensive option (journey approx. 2-3 hours depending on service).
How to Get Around Zalakaros#

- Train (to Nagykanizsa) (HUF 1,000-3,500) - Trains to Nagykanizsa from Budapest are regular; from Nagykanizsa you switch to a local bus or taxi for Zalakaros. Trains are comfortable and good for the main leg of the trip.
