How to Get to Zamárdi#
Zamárdi sits on the southern shore of Lake Balaton and is well served by regular trains from Budapest and regional buses in summer. For most visitors a direct train from Budapest is the easiest and quickest option.
Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD): Budapest is the main international gateway for reaching Zamárdi. From the airport transfer to Budapest Keleti or Kelenföld station then take a direct train to Zamárdi; total travel time airport→Zamárdi is typically 1.5-2.5 hours. Airport→city transfers: bus 100E or taxi (30-40 minutes, taxi ~€20-€35).
Other regional airports: Seasonal low‑cost flights sometimes use nearby regional airports, but Budapest is the practical arrival point for most visitors to Lake Balaton.
Train: Zamárdi has its own railway station (Zamárdi vasútállomás) on the Budapest-Nagykanizsa/Balaton line. Direct regional and InterRegio trains from Budapest take roughly 1.25-1.75 hours depending on service; fares commonly range from HUF 1,500-3,000 one‑way.
Bus: Volánbusz operates services around Lake Balaton; buses complement trains and can be useful for reaching lakeside points when trains don’t match your schedule. Bus journeys from Budapest to Zamárdi via Siófok are around 1.5-2.5 hours depending on route.
How to Get Around Zamárdi#
Trains from Budapest to Zamárdi are frequent and straightforward, especially in summer when additional services run; buses and seasonal boats add options for exploring the rest of Lake Balaton.
- MÁV regional / InterRegio trains (HUF 1,500-3,000) - Zamárdi station is on the main Budapest-Balaton line with frequent regional and InterRegio trains, especially in summer. Travel from Budapest takes about 1.25-1.75 hours; trains are reliable and often the best option for reaching the resort quickly.
- Volánbusz (regional bus) (HUF 1,200-2,500) - Volán buses provide additional links around Lake Balaton and to towns not directly on the rail line. Buses can be useful in high season when services increase; buy tickets at stations or from drivers for local routes.
- Ferry / boat (seasonal) (HUF 500-2,000 (seasonal)) - During the summer there are passenger boat services on Lake Balaton connecting some ports; these are seasonal and useful for scenic hops around the lake. Check MAHART schedules for availability and fares in peak season.
- Car (rental) (€30-€70/day (rental)) - Driving via the M7 motorway is convenient for reaching Zamárdi and the wider Balaton region; parking can be busy in summer. A car is helpful for visiting smaller lakeside villages and attractions off the rail corridor.
- Bicycle (HUF 800-2,500/day (rental)) - Zamárdi is popular with cyclists - dedicated cycle paths and flat lakeside routes make biking an excellent way to explore the shore. Bike rentals are common in summer and ideal for short trips between nearby beaches and villages.
- Walking - The town and its lakeside promenade are very walkable; walking is the best way to explore beaches, parks and the centre at a relaxed pace.

Shopping in Zamárdi#
Outside of the festival season, shopping in Zamárdi is modest-supermarkets, souvenir stalls and small boutiques serve visitors and locals. In summer many temporary stalls and vendors appear along the beach selling festival and lake-related goods. For serious shopping or specialty stores, larger Balaton towns or Siófok provide more options.
Nightlife in Zamárdi#
Zamárdi’s nightlife is highly seasonal: summers bring beach bars, outdoor stages and the big Balaton Sound festival, which draws international crowds. Outside the summer months the town is much quieter with a few local bars and restaurants. If you plan to experience the party scene, visit in summer when venues and events are operating at full capacity.
