How to Get to Zermatt#
Zermatt is car-free; most visitors arrive by rail from Geneva or Zurich, changing at Visp/Brig and then taking the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn into Zermatt (or by car to Täsch and shuttle train the last leg). The Täsch-Zermatt shuttle is short and frequent.
Geneva Airport (GVA): Many travellers fly into Geneva and continue to Zermatt by train. From Genève-Aéroport take SBB trains to Visp (about 2-2.5 hours) then change to the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn to Zermatt (additional ~1 hour overall from Geneva to Zermatt is commonly ~3-3.5 hours total). Typical combined fares vary widely (advance single tickets ~CHF 50-120 depending on discounts).
Zurich Airport (ZRH): From Zürich Airport take direct SBB trains to Visp/Brig and change for the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn to Zermatt; total journey time is about 3-3.5 hours and fares commonly range CHF 50-120 one-way depending on advance purchase and railcards.
Train: Zermatt is car-free - you travel by rail to Täsch (Täsch station) and take the shuttle train (Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn) into Zermatt. The Täsch-Zermatt shuttle runs frequently (about every 20 minutes) and takes roughly 12 minutes; single fare Täsch-Zermatt is around CHF 8-12.
Bus: Long-distance buses and coaches run to Täsch or Täsch/Visp area but the most common and scenic route is by Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) to Visp/Brig then the MGB narrow-gauge line to Zermatt.
How to Get Around Zermatt#
Zermatt is car-free and best reached by train (SBB → Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn) or by parking at Täsch and using the frequent shuttle train. Inside Zermatt walking and electric shuttles cover local movement; mountain railways provide access to higher elevations.
- SBB + Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (intercity rail) (CHF 50-150 (Geneva/Zurich → Zermatt, variable)) - The standard public route is SBB from Geneva/Zurich to Visp/Brig, then the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn to Zermatt. Trains are punctual and comfortable; scenic alpine sections begin after Visp. Book point-to-point tickets or use Swiss Travel passes where applicable.
- Täsch shuttle train (CHF 8-12) - Täsch is the nearest car park for Zermatt. Regular shuttle trains to Zermatt take about 12 minutes and run approximately every 20 minutes; typical one-way fare is about CHF 8-12. If you drive, you’ll park at Täsch and take the shuttle into Zermatt.
- Taxi / private transfer (CHF 20-80 (depending on route)) - Taxis operate to Täsch; direct transfers to Täsch car parks or Visp are available. Within Zermatt electric taxis and taxis for luggage transfers operate because the village is car-free - they are more expensive than trains but useful for door-to-door luggage service.

- Walking - Zermatt village is compact and best explored on foot. Streets are pedestrianised and walking is the primary way to get around the centre - comfortable shoes and warm clothing for alpine weather are recommended.
