How to Get to Zermatt#

Zermatt is car-free; most visitors arrive by rail from Geneva or Zurich, changing at Visp/Brig and then taking the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn into Zermatt (or by car to Täsch and shuttle train the last leg). The Täsch-Zermatt shuttle is short and frequent.

By Air

Geneva Airport (GVA): Many travellers fly into Geneva and continue to Zermatt by train. From Genève-Aéroport take SBB trains to Visp (about 2-2.5 hours) then change to the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn to Zermatt (additional ~1 hour overall from Geneva to Zermatt is commonly ~3-3.5 hours total). Typical combined fares vary widely (advance single tickets ~CHF 50-120 depending on discounts).

Zurich Airport (ZRH): From Zürich Airport take direct SBB trains to Visp/Brig and change for the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn to Zermatt; total journey time is about 3-3.5 hours and fares commonly range CHF 50-120 one-way depending on advance purchase and railcards.

By Train & Bus

Train: Zermatt is car-free - you travel by rail to Täsch (Täsch station) and take the shuttle train (Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn) into Zermatt. The Täsch-Zermatt shuttle runs frequently (about every 20 minutes) and takes roughly 12 minutes; single fare Täsch-Zermatt is around CHF 8-12.

Bus: Long-distance buses and coaches run to Täsch or Täsch/Visp area but the most common and scenic route is by Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) to Visp/Brig then the MGB narrow-gauge line to Zermatt.

How to Get Around Zermatt#

  • SBB + Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (intercity rail) (CHF 50-150 (Geneva/Zurich → Zermatt, variable)) - The standard public route is SBB from Geneva/Zurich to Visp/Brig, then the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn to Zermatt. Trains are punctual and comfortable; scenic alpine sections begin after Visp. Book point-to-point tickets or use Swiss Travel passes where applicable.

Within Zermatt electric taxis and taxis for luggage transfers operate because the village is car-free - they are more expensive than trains but useful for door-to-door luggage service.
