How to Get to Zhangye#

Zhangye is reachable by its local airport (Zhangye Ganzhou Airport, YZY) and by rail - the high‑speed Zhangye West station receives regular services on the Lanzhou-Xinjiang corridor. Many visitors also arrive via Lanzhou (LHW) and continue by train or coach to Zhangye.

By Air

Zhangye Ganzhou Airport (YZY): Zhangye Ganzhou Airport is the city’s airport, with domestic flights to major Chinese hubs. From the airport to Zhangye city centre there is an airport shuttle / airport bus (when operating) and local taxis. Shuttle buses typically cost around CN¥20-30 and take about 30-45 minutes; a taxi to the centre is usually CN¥100-160 and takes roughly 30-40 minutes depending on traffic.

Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport (LHW): Lanzhou Zhongchuan is the nearest large airport with more frequent domestic connections; many travellers fly to Lanzhou and continue overland to Zhangye. From Zhongchuan you first travel into Lanzhou (airport shuttle or taxi) then take a high-speed or conventional train or an intercity coach to Zhangye. Train journeys from Lanzhou West to Zhangye West typically take about 3-4 hours with second-class fares commonly in the CN¥100-180 range; long-distance coach trips take longer (4-6 hours) and fares vary by operator (roughly CN¥120-220).

By Train & Bus

Train: Zhangye is served by two main rail stations: Zhangye West (张掖西站) on the Lanzhou-Xinjiang high‑speed corridor and Zhangye Station (张掖站) on conventional lines. High-speed services to Zhangye West from Lanzhou/other regional hubs are the fastest regional option - typical travel from Lanzhou West is around 3-4 hours; second‑class tickets are commonly in the CN¥100-180 band depending on train. Conventional trains to Zhangye Station are slower but can be cheaper; overnight and slower services connect to cities along the Lanzhou-Xinjiang corridor.

Bus: Long‑distance coaches depart from the main Zhangye passenger bus stations (客运站) to nearby cities such as Jiayuguan, Dunhuang and Lanzhou. Journey times and fares depend on route and coach grade: for example, Zhangye-Jiayuguan is often around 2-3 hours (roughly CN¥60-100) while Zhangye-Dunhuang can be 5-7 hours (roughly CN¥120-200). Local city buses and minibuses provide very cheap travel within the urban area (fares typically CN¥1-3).

How to Get Around Zhangye#

Zhangye is easiest to navigate by a combination of train for regional travel and taxis or local buses within the city. For most visitors, arriving by high‑speed rail to Zhangye West then taking a taxi into town is the most convenient option; use city buses or bike rentals for cheap local trips and walk the central district on foot.

  • High‑speed rail (Zhangye West) (CN¥100-180) - Zhangye West (张掖西站) is the main station for high‑speed services on the Lanzhou-Xinjiang line and is the quickest way to reach Zhangye from regional hubs. Trains are comfortable and punctual; second‑class seats are the best value for most travellers. The station sits outside the historic core, so plan a taxi or local bus transfer from the station into town (see taxis and buses below).
  • Conventional trains (Zhangye Station) (CN¥30-120) - Zhangye Station (张掖站) handles slower, conventional services that can be cheaper and useful for night travel or if high‑speed tickets sell out. Services link towns along the older Lanzhou-Xinjiang route. Expect longer journey times than HSR but often lower fares and more departure options.
  • Long‑distance buses (CN¥60-220) - Intercity coaches run from the main passenger bus stations to nearby attractions and cities (Jiayuguan, Dunhuang, Lanzhou). Coaches are useful if train schedules are inconvenient; travel times vary by route and road conditions. Book at the bus station for the most reliable fares and departure times, and allow extra time during national holidays.
  • City buses & minibuses (CN¥1-3) - Zhangye’s city buses cover the main urban areas and are the cheapest way to get around - single fares are typically CN¥1-3. Routes can be slow and schedules less predictable than in major cities, but they reach most neighbourhoods and are useful for short trips. Carry small change and check route maps at major stops or ask station staff for help.
  • Taxis & ride‑hailing (Didi) (CN¥10-160) - Taxis are widely available and convenient for door‑to‑door travel; short city rides are inexpensive while longer trips from stations or the airport cost more. Metered start fares in smaller Gansu cities are modest, but airport transfers can run CN¥100-160 depending on distance. Didi works in most Chinese cities and is a good alternative if you have a local SIM and apps set up.
  • Bicycle / e‑bike rental (CN¥5-30/day) - Bikes and electric bikes are common for short trips around the central areas and to reach parks or riverfronts; rental is cheap and convenient for fine weather days. Use bike apps or local rental kiosks where available and avoid busy arterial roads. Helmets are not always provided, so ride cautiously and lock bikes when leaving them.
  • Walking - Walking is pleasant in the compact historic core and the main market streets; many attractions close to the city centre are easily explored on foot. Wear comfortable shoes for uneven pavements and plan short, daylight strolls rather than long night walks in quieter areas.
