How to Get to Zugdidi#
Zugdidi in Samegrelo is served by Zugdidi railway station and by intercity marshrutkas and buses, with the main air gateways being Tbilisi (TBS) and Kutaisi (KUT). Rail services exist but schedules vary, so check Georgian Railway timetables before planning.
Tbilisi International Airport (TBS): The main international gateway; from TBS you can reach Zugdidi by train or long-distance bus (see train & bus card) or take a taxi to Zugdidi (very long and expensive; rail/bus recommended).
Kutaisi International Airport (KUT): Smaller international flights arrive here. From Kutaisi a combination of bus to Zugdidi (with a transfer in Samtredia or Kutaisi bus station) is possible but usually slower than traveling via Tbilisi or Batumi depending on schedules.
Train: Zugdidi has a functioning railway station (Zugdidi railway station) with services on Georgian Railway including routes from Tbilisi and regional connections. Overnight and daytime services vary; journey from Tbilisi takes several hours (check current schedules and classes).
Bus / Marshrutka: Frequent marshrutkas and long-distance buses run to Zugdidi from Tbilisi (Didube) and from other regional centres. Travel time from Tbilisi is around 5-6 hours by road depending on service; fares are generally economical.
How to Get Around Zugdidi#

- Taxi (3-80 GEL) - Local taxis are useful for short transfers inside Zugdidi or to nearby attractions. For longer intercity trips taxis are expensive; consider shared options or buses instead. Always agree a fare beforehand or use known providers.
- Local buses / minibuses (0.5-2 GEL) - Zugdidi has local minibus routes around town and to surrounding villages. They are the cheapest way to get around but can be crowded and have irregular timetables. Ask at your accommodation for guidance on routes.
- Car hire (60-130 GEL/day) - Hiring a car is useful if you plan to explore Samegrelo’s coastline or rural areas. Roads closer to major towns are generally passable; hire a car with adequate ground clearance if you head into more remote terrain.
