High / low are average daily temperatures (°C). “Feels” reflects how hot or cold it feels, allowing for humidity.
Tihama (Red Sea coastal plain: Al Hudaydah, Mocha, coastal strip)
August remains among the hottest months: days are long, humid, and prone to heat haze, with little measurable rainfall but frequent discomfort from the combination of heat and humidity. Fishermen and traders still operate but ocean conditions may be rough; check local operators before booking sea trips. This month is best avoided for strenuous activity; early mornings along Mocha’s waterfront are the only comfortable window for walking and photography.
Aden & Southern Coast (Aden, Zinjibar, Al Mukalla shoreline)
August remains uncomfortably warm and humid, and visitor services are at their quietest with most travel concentrated in the morning and evening. Ferry crossings to smaller coastal settlements can be very choppy or canceled, so coordinate with operators and allow flexible time. If staying in Aden, choose accommodation with reliable cooling and avoid midafternoon heat when transport and roads might be slow due to reduced visibility from haze or dust.
Highlands (Sana’a, Ibb, Taiz, Dhamar, Jabal An-Nabi Shu’ayb)
Late summer in August still carries significant rain in many highland zones, with the terraces at their greenest and waterfalls at their fullest - excellent for landscape photography if you accept the muddy conditions. Rural markets bustle with post-harvest activity where feasible, but passable routes are sometimes limited after storms. Carry rainproof gear, permits or local guidance where required, and be prepared for spirited local hospitality in towns like Ibb when you arrive soggy.
Hadhramaut Plateau & Eastern Interior (Sayun, Shibam, Marib, Wadi Hadhramaut)
August keeps the plateau hot and dry with very little respite until evening; travelers should plan for early starts and tightly scheduled activities. Fuel and logistics in smaller towns may be limited as daily life slows in the heat, so stock water, check vehicle readiness, and have local contacts. This month is poorly suited for long desert treks without experienced guides and support vehicles.
Socotra Archipelago
August keeps the pattern of strong winds and unsettled seas, often the least reliable period for marine access to Socotra’s satellite islets though onshore trekking routes remain possible. Expect isolated showers and squalls off the coast, and be prepared for sudden changes in sea state that affect snorkeling or fishing excursions. Travel insurance and flexible bookings are strongly advised for this time of year.
