Northern Highlands & Lake Region (Kasama, Mbala, Mansa, Mpulungu)
By March the downpours are frequent but begin to thin toward month-end; many secondary roads remain unreliable. Kasama’s surrounding plateaus are lush and waterfalls are swollen, which is spectacular for short hikes though trails get slippery. Birding improves as water bodies expand, but safaris in the far north are tricky because camps sometimes close or restrict 4x4 access - bring gaiters and a lightweight waterproof shell.
Copperbelt & Northern Plateau (Ndola, Kitwe, Chingola)
March brings the wet season toward its close but retains frequent rain and high humidity; rivers and drainage channels are full and some rural roads remain sloppy. This is a good month for visiting local cultural sites with fewer tourists but expect last-minute transport changes after storms. If you’re heading to the outskirts for hiking coffee plantations or small reserves, choose a sturdy 4x4 for dirt roads.
Lusaka Plateau & Central Province (Lusaka, Kafue, Kabwe)
March starts the transition as storm frequency remains high but intense periods may be separated by clear spells; the bush is noticeably greener. Kafue National Park’s rivers run high and walking safaris are muddier or temporarily closed in low-lying areas, but birdlife and newborn plains animals increase. Flights to smaller bush strips can be delayed - allow flexibility in your schedule.
South Luangwa & Eastern Lowlands (Mfuwe, Chipata, Lundazi)
March begins the slow withdrawal of water in side channels while the main river stays robust; heavy afternoon storms still occur but there are more dryer interludes. Camps start preparing for the transition and some walking and night drives resume where ground conditions allow. If you enjoy lush landscapes and dramatic skies without the busy crowds, this is appealing but expect muddy tracks.
Livingstone, Lower Zambezi & Southern Riverlands (Livingstone, Lower Zambezi, Siavonga)
March still sees frequent heavy storms but they become more intermittent late in the month; river levels are high and rafting or canoeing plans should be checked with operators. The spray at Victoria Falls remains strong, enhancing the spectacle, while the Lower Zambezi floodplain is full and boats move over channels that are dry later in the year. For photographers, the scene is dynamic though ground access around river banks can be muddy.
Western Province & Barotse Floodplain (Mongu, Barotse/Lozi plains)
March remains very wet across the Barotse plains as upstream rains continue; the flood extent varies year to year but the topography ensures large seasonal inundation. Traditional life and seasonal events adapt to this rhythm - expect canoe- and boat-based village visits and limited road options. For travellers, this is a unique time to experience river-based culture and wide open water meadows, but carry appropriate gear for damp conditions.
