Northern Highlands & Lake Region (Kasama, Mbala, Mansa, Mpulungu)
September begins to warm noticeably and the land dries into dusty reds, especially around Mansa and the lower plains. Migratory and local bird activity increases as wetlands shrink and concentrate wildlife, so photography and game-viewing at remaining waterholes get better. Daytime heat grows toward the end of the month - carry water, light breathable clothing and a hat for mid-day explorations.
Copperbelt & Northern Plateau (Ndola, Kitwe, Chingola)
September is the hot, pre-rain period: afternoons become noticeably warmer and dust is at its peak on unsealed tracks leaving the Copperbelt. This is a good month for seeing the region’s open-pit mines and local markets, though the heat can be oppressive for long outdoor excursions; carry water and avoid the midday sun. Begin to expect the odd thunderstorm toward month-end as the build-up to rains begins.
Lusaka Plateau & Central Province (Lusaka, Kafue, Kabwe)
September heats up noticeably; Lusaka grows warm and dusty as the dry season peaks and vegetation browns. This is an excellent month for seeing wildlife in the central parks before the rains, though midday heat can be intense; carry water and a sun hat for drives. Expect fewer clouds and stable travel conditions but increasingly dusty road surfaces.
South Luangwa & Eastern Lowlands (Mfuwe, Chipata, Lundazi)
September is the onset of the hot, pre-rain build-up: days grow very warm and dust levels peak; animals still congregate at waterholes but may be harder to find in thick heat haze. This is a good month for lower lodge rates before the rains and for photographers who want raw, arid landscapes. Carry sun protection, light breathable clothing and plenty of water on excursions.
Livingstone, Lower Zambezi & Southern Riverlands (Livingstone, Lower Zambezi, Siavonga)
September heats up noticeably as the dry season peaks; river levels are low and the gorge reveals more rock, offering dramatic photographic contrasts at Victoria Falls. Canoe trips and riverbank walks become easier and some pools are shallow; mid-day heat can be intense so schedule activities for mornings and late afternoons. Pack sun protection, light clothes and plenty of water for excursions.
Western Province & Barotse Floodplain (Mongu, Barotse/Lozi plains)
September warms up and the floodplain dries and browns in places, leaving scattered wetlands that attract concentrated birdlife and grazing animals. This is a good month for overland exploration and for seeing waterbirds congregating in shrinking channels. Pack lightweight clothing for warm days, a warm layer for chillier mornings, and prepare for dusty conditions on inland tracks.
