Zambezi Valley & Victoria Falls (northwest)
Cool, dry mornings and bright days characterize June across the Zambezi corridor, with little rain and comfortable touring weather. The falls show slightly reduced volume but remain impressive; there are excellent conditions for walking the rain-forest trails because the paths are firmer and less muddy. Wildlife viewing is strong as animals remain at water points, and clear skies are ideal for helicopter flights over the gorge - book early as demand rises.
Eastern Highlands (Mutare, Nyanga, Chimanimani)
June is characteristically cool and often the coldest month in the highlands, with bright, dry days and nights that can approach freezing on higher ground. Visibility is excellent for long-distance views; if you’re planning multi-day treks, expect crisp mornings and the occasional frost that hardens muddy sections. Campsites can be cold overnight so bring an insulated sleeping bag and warm layers for early drives and summit attempts.
Central Plateau & Harare-Masvingo (Highveld)
June is one of the coolest months on the highveld with clear air and potentially frosty mornings in sheltered spots, though daytime temperatures remain pleasant for sightseeing. The dry season concentrates wildlife at permanent water points in nearby reserves like Matusadona and Lake Kyle, improving game-viewing opportunities. Pack thermal layers for dawn drives and a warm hat for evenings in smaller lodges with simpler heating.
Matabeleland & Western Highlands (Bulawayo, Matobo, Hwange fringe)
June is one of the coolest months with crisp, dry mornings and moderate daytime warmth that makes for comfortable wildlife walking and ridge-climbing. Matobo’s panoramic views are particularly clear and the air quality is excellent for photography; lodges in the area often provide extra blankets at night. The low rainfall reduces insect nuisance compared with summer, a welcome change for campers and overlanders.
Lowveld & Gonarezhou/Beitbridge (southeast and far south)
June is dry and cooler, with mornings that can be brisk in the shade and afternoons that remain comfortably warm - ideal for early and late game drives. Many lodges in Gonarezhou and surrounding concessions report excellent wildlife sightings as animals cluster around permanent waterholes. This is a popular period for bushwalking and fly-camping in ranger-led experiences, so book with operators experienced in the area.
