Zambezi Valley & Victoria Falls (northwest)

By March the rainy season is still dominant; days are hot and humid while the landscape is intensely green. Flooded tracks are common in rural areas, and ferry crossings or unpaved roads into parks like Mana Pools may be unreliable - check with local operators before booking transfers. The falls remain powerful and increasingly spectacular, though heavy cloud and spray can make photography tricky; early-morning trips often offer the clearest light.

Eastern Highlands (Mutare, Nyanga, Chimanimani)

March sees a gradual tapering of storms but still significant rain on many days, and the highlands hold onto their cloud and cooler temperatures. Mutare’s market town atmosphere is humid and fresh after rains, and birding can be excellent with many migrant species present; however some remote backcountry routes become impassable after heavy storms. Accommodation in the highlands is quieter than in the dry season, so it’s a good time for fewer crowds if you can tolerate wet weather.

Central Plateau & Harare-Masvingo (Highveld)

By March the rains start to thin but still produce heavy showers, leaving the plateau lush and cooling afternoon temperatures. Birding around Lake Kyle (Lakeshore) and smaller reserves is rewarding as migrants and residents exploit refreshed wetlands; however, some rural lodges access roads can be rough after storms. Evening temperatures become noticeably milder, making outdoor dining and late drives more comfortable than in mid-summer.

Matabeleland & Western Highlands (Bulawayo, Matobo, Hwange fringe)

By March the rain frequency lessens but substantial showers can still occur; days are warm and the landscape keeps a late-summer look. This is a productive time for birdwatchers in Matobo National Park as migrants mix with residents, and smaller crowds make for quiet ridge walks. Some remote 4x4 tracks can be rough, so a reliable vehicle and local advice are recommended for exploring beyond Bulawayo.

Lowveld & Gonarezhou/Beitbridge (southeast and far south)

March still feels summery with heavy showers and high humidity, though the frequency of storms begins to ease late in the month. The lowveld’s rivers remain high and boat travel can be energetic; lodges often have contingency plans for guest transfers when smaller bridges and fords are affected. Beitbridge and border crossings can slow under wet-season road conditions, so factor in extra travel time.
